MDR - Tapeless Graphics System

Since the beginning of December 2006, MDR in Leipzig has been broadcasting as the first ARD TV network to use a Chyron-based, tapeless ingest of graphical elements for the news.

The workflow, from researching various sources in the Editorial Department to playing out the finished graphical elements to the master control room, has changed dramatically. The order was placed with Studio Hamburg Media Consult International (MCI) GmbH in June 2006. A new central graphic server (HP MSA 1000) with a gross storage capacity of 1.2 TB as a high availability SAN with an ADIC file system was delivered and a redundant Chyron CAMIO server system was integrated for connecting the Avid iNews editorial system.

The intensive preparation and collaboration between Chyron Deutschland and MCI was the basic requirement for a smooth-running project. audioone GmbH installed the hardware on behalf of Studio Hamburg Media Consult International (MCI) GmbH. AVC GmbH was responsible for commissioning the basic components and the fully cascaded KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) system. The company WBS IT from Leipzig was the competent partner for the standard IT systems. Following a project period of six months, the new system went on air in December 2006. The MDR was consequently the first European broadcaster to use a fully automatic playout control of character generators and fixed image memory by a user via the Chyron ISQ (intelligent sequencer).

Two PC-based graphics editing systems were created in the Editorial Department of MDR aktuell (news graphics), and three playout positions for playing the graphics out to the master control rooms were adapted with regard to monitoring and flexible control in different operating modes.
